ALL John Sabraw's Artwork is ZERO NET CARBON Emissions!

HOW I DID IT:
First a caveat: this is considered a ballpark estimate. I have faithfully executed all calculations and consulted experts on acceptable allowances and categories. I will, however, continue to refine these and adjust as necessary as well as provide a simplified version for other artists/art owners to use.

I based the carbon footprint of making and shipping my art on 3 factors:

1. Transportation: Air Travel, Car miles, shipping, for material procurement and travel and shipping to exhibitions.

2. Production and Research Energy usage: All electricity and gas used in maintaining a studio, manufacturing art, and doing research.

3. Indirect Emissions: A commonly used factor to allow for other emissions not directly translatable from electricity, gas, or travel. [This accounts for emissions from most of the materials used, i.e. canvas, paints, etc.]

Car miles per year for art: 1200 miles per year x 15 years = 18,000 miles divided by average MPG 27 = 667 x 19.564 (carbon output per) = 13049.188 lbs of CO2 x 8.2 = 107003.3416 F3 x 0.02831684464 = 3029.997 M3 ÷ by 1,333 = 2.2730660165 Metric Tonnes of CO2.

Air Travel: Average of 1 round trip flight per year for exhibitions. Studio to events average round trip flight is 600 miles per year x 15 years = 9,000 miles = 4.55 Metric Tonnes of CO2. (Carbonfund.org calculator)

Shipping: 250 artworks, most less than half the US in distance. (Carbonfund.org calculator)

Electricity: 12,000 KWH (total house plus studio usage) x .21 [studio is 21% of total house + studio sq ft) 2,250 KWH x 15 years = 37,800 KWH = 1625.4 kilograms of CO2 x 2.20462262 = 3583.393606548 lbs of CO2 x 8.2 = 29383.8275736936 F3 x 0.02831684464 = 832.05728033283 M3 ÷ by 1,333 = 0.62419901 Metric Tonnes of CO2.

Gas: 13 vents, 1 in the studio, for 9 years. Other 6 years portion of larger building usage 394 ccf for entire house divided by 13 vents = 31 ccf annual usage for studio for 9 years, estimated similar ccf for portion of building during 6 other years so, 15 years x 31 ccf = 465 ccf (or 465 therms est.) total gas usage. 465 therms x 11.7 (carbon output per) = 5440.5 lbs of CO2 x 8.2 = 44612.1 F3 x 0.02831684464 = 1263.27390476414 M3 ÷ by 1,333 = 0.94769235166 Metric Tonnes of CO2.

Sub Totals:
.948 Metric Tonnes from Natural Gas
.625 Metric Tonnes from Electricity via Coal
2.274 Metric Tonnes from Car Usage.
4.55 Metric Tonnes from Air Travel
.33 Metric Tonnes from Shipping.

Sub Total Above Emissions: 8.727

Indirect Emissions: Total Emissions from 1 & 2 = 8.727 x 1.4 (indirect emissions factor) = 12.218 Metric Tonnes of CO2

Grand Total:
Therefore, the total output of CO2 for 15 years and 250 works of art is 12.218 Metric Tonnes.
